The Tusks (mapembe) The history of the iconic Tusks (locally known as Mapembe) in Mombasa is tied to the city’s colonial past. These aluminum tusks were constructed in 1952 to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Mombasa shortly after she ascended to the throne. The place is well known for photography and just next to it is a caressing garden full of beautiful plants and the unique Flying foxes FORT JESUS Fort Jesus is one of Mombasa’s most famous historical landmarks. It was built in 1593–1596 by the Portuguese, Fort Jesus was designed to protect their interests along the East African coast. The Portuguese had a strong presence in the Indian Ocean and were trying to secure control over the lucrative spice trade routes.It is well known for reserving the history of the early visitors of Mombasa. OLD TOWN The Mombasa old Town is well known for the preserving of the swahili people and the Orman Arabs who settled along the coastal part of Mombasa.its building have been there for over 100 years and they have a unique design such as the balcony of the houses facing each other so that people could have a chat. It is also well known for its souvenir shops which supply the guests with some beautiful beeds and souvenir. HALLER PARK Haller Park is a well-known nature park and wildlife sanctuary with various species of animals such as girrafes,monkies,crocodiles,tortoise,Ostrich and many more. The park is a remarkable example of ecological restoration, as it was created from a former limestone quarry site. It stands today as a thriving habitat for various species of plants and animals, as well as a popular tourist attraction.Some common activities at haller Park include the feeding of girrafes and also you will have a chance to see the most old tortoise which is over 150 years old.
