The Tusks (mapembe) The history of the iconic Tusks (locally known as Mapembe) in Mombasa is tied to the city’s colonial past. These aluminum tusks were constructed in 1952 to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Mombasa shortly after she ascended to the throne.
