Description
Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve Begin your journey with a drive from Nairobi to the Samburu National Reserve. Stop at the Equator line in Nanyuki for a classic water demonstration. Watch the landscape transform from fertile highlands to the arid, red soil of the Samburu region. In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive in the Samburu National Reserve. Look out for the 'Special Five' – unique species adapted to dry climates: the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy's Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Gerenuk, and Beisa Oryx. Day 2: Samburu to Maralal Drive through rugged hills and remote villages to Maralal, considered the gateway to the north and a hub for the Samburu people. Visit a local market (if market day) for a vibrant cultural experience. In the afternoon, enjoy a short camel safari from your lodge, led by Samburu guides. This is a timeless way to connect with the landscape. Day 3: Maralal to Loyangalani Embark on the most demanding drive of the trip, passing through the Baragoi desert area, with stunning views of Mt. Nyiru and the volcanic terrain of the Ndoto Mountains. Catch your first glimpse of Lake Turkana, its jade-green waters appearing like a mirage in the desert. Arrive in Loyangalani, a small oasis town on the lake's shore. Visit the Loyangalani Desert Museum to understand the region's diverse tribes: Turkana, El Molo, Rendille, and Samburu. Day 4: Central Island National Park Take a rugged boat trip to Central Island National Park, a volcanic island with three crater lakes: Crocodile Lake, Flamingo Lake, and Tilapia Lake. Hike to the rim of these craters for an otherworldly view. The island is a major breeding ground for Nile crocodiles. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the island. For the truly adventurous, your guide can arrange fishing for Nile perch. Day 5: Loyangalani and the Kalokol Petrified Forest Visit an El Molo Village, one of Kenya's smallest tribes, traditionally hunter-gatherers of the lake. Learn about their unique culture and resilience. Drive to the Kalokol Petrified Forest to see this fascinating geological site where ancient trees have turned to stone, a testament to the region's dramatic geological history. End the day with a legendary sunset over Lake Turkana, where the colors are intense and the silence is profound. Day 6: Return Journey via Chalbi Desert (Optional) Choose between a direct route back to Maralal or an even more extreme route across the stunning, vast desert plain of the Chalbi Desert. This option requires a minimum of 2 days to return to Nairobi comfortably. Day 7: Back to Nairobi Drive back to Nairobi, reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past week. Your perspective on 'wilderness' will have changed forever.Includes
