Description
Tsavo East National Park
Part of the massive Tsavo ecosystem along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway; Kenya's largest national park at nearly 13,747 square kilometers.
Characterized by flat, open semi-arid grasslands and a dramatic landscape.
Known widely for its iconic 'red elephants,' which dust-bathe in the area's rich iron-oxide red soil, plus lions, leopards, and diverse antelopes.
Tsavo West National Park
Separated from Tsavo East by the road and railway line; covering a rugged 9,000 square kilometers
Features a wet, mountainous, and volcanic terrain with the Shetani lava flows, Lake Jipe, and the crystal-clear Mzima Springs with its underwater viewing chamber
Home to a protected black rhino sanctuary, leopards, lions, and red-dusted elephants, though thicker bush vegetation makes game viewing more patient work than in Amboseli or Tsavo East
