Description

Kibera is the largest slum in Africa. It is located in the southwest part of NAIROBI about 5 to 7 km from the city centre. They are over 700,000 people living in Kibera slum. The aim for organising this tour is to raise awareness about the communities real living conditions while breaking common stereotypes. I seek to promote cultural exchange and understanding through respectful interaction between visitors and residence. The tour also aims to support community development by creating income and opportunities for local people. There are five activities during this tour; 1. Open air market visit. We will visit one of the local market where general items are sold to the locals. Most of the items here are second-hand items. 2. View Point. We will then go to a view point where you will see a general view of kibera slum. We will explain more about the history and the present state of Kibera slum. 3. Children Centre. You will then visit one of the community children’s centre where you will meet and interact with a lot of kids from the community. 4. Home Visit. We will welcome you into one of the houses in the slum so you can see and understand the inside living conditions. 5. Public Bus ( matatu ) Finally we will take a public bus back to the meeting point.
