Description
The trip begins with an early departure from Nairobi at around 5:30 AM, heading out via Thika Road. The drive takes roughly two hours, passing through Thika town before reaching the park entrance. Upon arrival at around 8:00 AM, guests begin the hike to the summit of Mt. Ol Donyo Sabuk. The trail is about 9 km long and takes 2 to 3 hours to complete. Along the way, visitors have a chance to see buffalo, which are common and gave the mountain its name. Other animals that may be spotted include olive baboons, vervet monkeys, bushbucks, duikers, and a variety of bird species like hornbills, hawk-eagles, and sunbirds.
At the summit, hikers are rewarded with wide, open views of the Athi plains, Mt. Kenya, and on very clear days, Mt. Kilimanjaro. Around noon, guests can enjoy a packed picnic lunch at a quiet spot before beginning the descent. By around 1:00 PM, the group leaves the park to make a brief visit to the Kilimambogo cultural area, where local guides may share insights into traditional Kikuyu heritage and the significance of the surrounding hills.
The final stop of the day is Fourteen Falls, located near Thika along the Athi River. It’s a beautiful location for photos, light exploration, and a short break before returning to the city. Guests begin the drive back to Nairobi at around 4:00 PM, with an optional stop in Thika for refreshments. Arrival back in the city is expected between 5:30 and 6:30 PM
