Description

Day 1: Ascent to Old Moses Camp (3,300m) Depart from Nanyuki town after completing park formalities. Drive to the Sirimon Park Gate (2,650m) and start your trek through the beautiful montane forest, which gradually gives way to bamboo and then heathland. Climb steadily upwards, offering your first spectacular views of the main peaks. Arrive at Old Moses Camp (3,300m) in time for lunch. Take a short, slow walk higher up the trail after lunch and then return to the hut to aid acclimatization ('climb high, sleep low'). Rest, hydrate, and have an early dinner. Day 2: Acclimatization Hike to Shipton's Camp (4,236m) After an early breakfast, begin the long but breathtaking trek across the Mackinder's Valley. Pass through the iconic 'Vertical Bog' – a section of boardwalks over alpine wetlands. The views of the main peaks (Batian and Nelion) become increasingly dramatic as you ascend. Have lunch at a scenic spot along the way. Arrive at Shipton's Camp (4,236m), situated directly beneath the towering peaks. The altitude will be noticeable. Rest, drink plenty of fluids, and prepare your gear for the pre-dawn summit attempt. Try to sleep by 7:00 or 8:00 PM. Day 3: Summit Point Lenana & Descent via Chogoria (4,985m → 2,950m) Wake up for a quick tea and biscuits. Begin the final summit push in the dark with your headlamp. The air is cold, and the scree slope is challenging. Your goal is to reach Point Lenana (4,985m) just before or at sunrise. Standing on the summit as the sun rises over the African plains is an unforgettable experience. Take your photos, celebrate, and begin the descent back to Shipton's Camp before the weather can change. After a warm breakfast at Shipton's, pack up and begin the long but incredibly scenic descent via the Chogoria Route. Pass the stunning Temple Lake and walk along the 'Gorges Valley,' with sheer cliffs and beautiful alpine tarns. Day 4: The Waterfall & Gorge Descent / Return to Civilization Wake up early for a chance to see the sunrise over the peaks from Minto's. Have a hearty final mountain breakfast. Pack all your gear and ensure you have everything. Start the descent from Minto's Hut. The initial part is a relatively flat or gently descending traverse across the moors with fantastic views back towards the summit. Walk down through the stunning Gorges Valley, past waterfalls, and through the magical bamboo forest.

Important Information

• This is a strenuous trek requiring excellent physical condition and prior hiking experience. Altitude sickness is a risk; acclimatization is crucial. Booking must be done in advance via a tour operator. The best time to go is during the driest months: January to February and September to December.
