Description
8 am pick up from your hotel in Malindi or Watamu and start your tour at Gede ruins. On this day you will experience history with this extensive collection of 13th- to 17th-century coral palaces, mosques and town houses – some of Kenya’s most important Swahili ruins. Excavation has unearthed many structures that were once inhabited by a mix of Arab and Bantu residents. Although some of the structures have been ‘repaired’, the place retains a spooky, spiritual feel, watched over by a huge baobab. After you Gede ruins tour you will proceed to Mida Creek where you arrive for a 2 hour boat ride through the Mangroves. Later, you will enjoy a guide board walk along the trails that are found along the creek, and you may observe and identify some of the most diverse fauna, such as resident and migratory bird species. Mida Creek is not only one of the most successful mangrove forests on the planet, but the area is also noted as an International Bird Area, as well as part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that is shared with Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve. You will have lunch at a locally owned restaurant in Mida called Crab Shack Dabaso. This is a unique restaurant situated at Mida Creek, not far from Dabaso village, with low impact wooden construction standing at the edge of the mangrove forest with panoramic views of the Creek. Serving both local and international menus. The local special menu includes delicious fresh fish, prawns, and crab dinner cooked by a trained chef and MCCC member Dixon. Soft drinks and beers are also available. The restaurant looks out to stunning views of Kirepwe Island and also provides a good spot for bird watching.(Lunch is at your own cost) After lunch, you will proceed to famous Vasco da Gama Pillar believed to be one of the oldest European monuments in Africa, built in 1498. Learn how Malindi is among Kenya’s oldest cities, strategically positioned as a sea route for traders to and from Africa’s east coast. Continue to the distinctive Portuguese chapel known as the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier located on the waterfront. Admire how much they have been timing for 517 years now, the walls that have defied time and still resist. Hear the story of how the chapel was also built by Vasco Da Gama in 1498 as he passed here on his way to India. Later drop off at your hotel in the evening.Includes
